Ms. Dorothy Louise Bishop

Ms. Dorothy Louise Bishop was born January 24, 1943 to the late Robert Lee Bishop and Addie Mae Bishop of Starkville, Mississippi. She departed this life February 4, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Columbus, Mississippi. She confessed Christ at an early age at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member at death. Dorothy dropped out of school after completing the seventh grade because of the inequities that existed in a system that boasted of “Separate but Equal.” She began the process of learning how to survive in a hostile and racist environment at a very young age. At the age of seventeen she began her life work, under the tutelage of such notables as Mr. Amos Rice, Dr. Douglas Conner, and Dr. Morris Kinsey. Ms. Bishop was a Civil Rights Activist for more than fifty years. She served for twelve years as youth adviser for the county’s Youth NAACP chapter before becoming the main entity’s first female president in 1993. She has earned numerous NAACP honors, including the 1994 Fannie Lou Hamer Award. In 2005, removed from the rosters of active ranking members of the NAACP, Ms. Bishop organized The Coalition of the Concerned Citizens in which she presided over until death. Ms. Bishop traveled to Washington D.C. on various occasions to participate in various marches related to the Civil Rights of her peers. Among those are: Solidarity Day (September 19, 1981), NAACP Silent March in Washington (1988), and Jena Six March on Washington (2007). She also organized and participated in many protests and marches in the State of Mississippi. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters: Leah (Wilfred) Bush of Flint, Michigan; and Daril (Marshall) Clinton of Starkville, Mississippi; five grandchildren: Antionette (Lonzie) Stovall of Covington, Georgia; Leah Bishop of Starkville, Mississippi; Latoya Bishop of Starkville, Mississippi; Aubrianna Bush of Flint, Michigan; and Kiyon Bush of Flint, Michigan; nine great grandchildren, Ayshana Johnson, Lathan Stovall, Taylor Johnson, Ryan Stovall, Madison Stovall, Zaylin Bishop, Kennedy Davis, Tristan Bishop, and Katelyn Stovall; eight sisters: Clyte Mobley of Starkville, Mississippi; Betty (Lawrence) Rogers of Starkville, Mississippi; Linda (Terry) Crummy of Palmetto, Georgia; Jennifer (Gary) Jean of Woodstock, Georgia; Martesa Bishop of Starkville, Mississippi; Sheila Johnson of Starkville, Mississippi; Lula Hines Hunt of Kankakee, Illinois; and Virginia Hines (Napoleon) Hunt of Kankakee, Illinois; five brothers: Andrew (Patricia) Hines of Starkville, Mississippi; James (Linda) Hines of Kankakee, Illinois; Henry (Mary) Hines of Kankakee, Illinois; Leroy (Valerie) Hines of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Robert Johnson of Starkville, Mississippi; ** Genice Logan of Chicago, Illinois; and Albert Reed*** Ms. Bishop was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Addie Mae Bishop; her son: Maurice Bishop; and two sisters: Mildred Davis and Loretta Bishop.
