Starkville

Alvin “Stonewall” Jackson, age 92, of Starkville, Mississippi, passed away peacefully Saturday January 31st in his home. Born in Louisville, Mississippi, to the late Oliver and Eddie Jackson, Alvin was a devoted husband, father, and family man who, in spirit and heart, never aged past 39—a detail fondly remembered by those who knew and loved him. He was the middle of three children; both his brother Jack and sister Lilly preceded him in death. He shared 59 loving years of marriage with his wife, Mary Jackson, who affectionately called him James. He was a proud father to his seven daughters: Eddie, Linda, Arletha, Mia, Sheryl (Curtis), Meryl, and Kim (Curt), and his son, Ronnie, all of whom he cherished deeply, known for his playful humor, he was famous for jokingly threatening to give his grandchildren a “knuckle sandwich”—always delivered with a grin and followed by laughter. Visiting Alvin also came with a lighthearted requirement: Pepsi, Cheez-Its, Doublemint gum, and Werther’s Originals were expected treats for anyone coming by his home. A veteran, Alvin honorably served one tour in the United States Army. He had a deep love for music and especially enjoyed singing in the quartet group The Illinois Specials, where his voice and fellowship brought joy to many. He was also an outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting, pursuits that reflected his appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. During his earlier years, Alvin lived and worked in East St. Louis, Illinois, before relocating to Starkville, Mississippi, which he proudly called home. His life journey was marked by service, song, laughter, and love, leaving a lasting legacy for all who knew him. Alvin leaves a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, a special God Son “Goopy” and his special niece, Timesha aka “Muscles.”
