Mother Birdie Mae Sykes-Bishop was born February 18, 1921 in Longview, Mississippi to Albert Sykes and Gussie Gillespie-Sykes. Birdie was the oldest of nine children. She was educated in the Oktibbeha County School System.
At an early age, Mother Bishop became a member of the 16th Section Baptist Church where she confessed hope in Christ. In the late 1940’s Birdie met and married Jim Lucas Bishop. Six children were born into this union; John, Irene, Shirley, Robert, Patricia, and Debra. Mother Bishop was a meticulous homemaker that worked skillfully with her hands in sewing, cooking, and gardening. Her beautiful yard has been admired by many.
Over the years, Mother Bishop re-dedicated her life to the service of God in the ministry at Peter’s Rock Temple Church of God In Christ. She served in different auxiliaries such as a Prayer & Bible Band Treasurer and a dedicated Church Mother. Her strong faith in God enabled her to raise her family in the way of the Lord.
