Mr. Dennis Lee "Gus" Rogers

Dennis Lee “Gus” Rogers was born on May 12, 1959 to the late Frank Lee and Rena Mae Rogers. Dennis departed this life peacefully on Sunday morning, April 27, 2014 at University of Alabama Medical Center with his family members at his side. Dennis attended Starkville Elementary Schools and graduated from Starkville High School in 1977. After graduation, Dennis got his first job in 1977 with the Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors as a backhoe operator. In 1978, he began working with the Starkville Public Schools as a bus-driver and later was employed with the City of Starkville Electric Department from 1979 to 1984 as a meter-reader. He then transferred from the electric department to the Starkville Police Department on December 1, 1984. The Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy screamed his name in 1985 when he graced the academy with his presence. On June 1, 1985 when he graduated one of nineteen from a class that started with thirty-seven students, he then returned to Starkville to serve and protect the city. Officer Rogers had the desire to excel, so he took the sergeant’s exam. Dennis was successful in this venture and was sworn in as Sergeant Dennis Rogers on June 23, 1995. Sergeant Dennis Rogers has worked with the Starkville Police Department for 15 years. During this time he has accomplished various awards and certifications, training officer, and crime scene technician just to name a few of his achievements. As much as Dennis loved the Starkville Police Department, Dennis loved his home church, Plair United Methodist Church. Dennis was a member of Board of Trustees, chair of the Food Committee, . Dennis was a loyal and faithful member of Plair until his health grew weak. Even when Dennis was unable to perform his duties at Plair, he would attend, serve and give instructions to members. Another love of Dennis was keeping the grounds looking beautiful at his church, his home, and many others homes. Although Dennis had these love, he loved God the most and that’s why Dennis was able to stand strong. Dennis leaves to cherish his memories: a wife, Joni Francine Rogers; mother, Rena Mae Rogers; three children, Krishina (Juan) Turnipseed, Tiffany D. Rogers, and McKenzie Rogers; stepsons, Jarvis and Johnny; two sisters, Faye (Jerome), Lisa Hendrix; two brothers, Frank (Sherly) Rogers, Jr., Wilburn (Maxine) Rogers; brother-in-law, John; four grandchildren, Tydarian Rogers, Jeremiah Turnipseed, Joshua Turnipseed, and Kayden Rogers all of Starkville, Mississppi; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
