Freddie Drungole High was born on October 24, 1924 in Monticello, Mississippi. As the sixth of
eight children born to educators and musicians Professor Charles M. Drungole and Mrs. Mayten
Comfort Drungole, baby Freddie entered a caring home that was filled with music, intellectual
exchange, and strong family and Christian values. She learned to play piano from her mother at a
tender age, along with the lifelong value of music and education. Young Freddie began elementary
school at Oktibbeha County Training School (OCTS; now Henderson High School), after her father
moved the family from Monticello to Starkville, having accepted the position of principal at the
school. During this period, Freddie was baptized into the Second Baptist Church to which her father belonged, as were her siblings and mother, and the family grew up in this church. Her mother was a pianist and organist there for thirty years, and her father occasionally accompanied her and the choir with the violin and cello.
