She was very active in the community. She was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority for over forty years and has held several offices (including President) in the Zeta Lambda Sigma Chapter. She was also active with Heroines of Jericho. She was the most ancient matron of Rising Star Court #30.
Verlie was a graduate of Jackson State University. She worked for many years in accounting and payroll at Community Counselling Services. Verlie worked for 15 years as business manager at Mary Holmes College. She retired as business manager from Oktibbeha County Schools in June 2015.
She leaves to cherish her memories, three children: Kent Collins (Amanda) of Rogers, AR, Dennis Floyd, Jr. (Brooke) of Jackson, MS and Chris Floyd of Starkville, MS. two sisters: Teresa Foster and Aries Rice; one brother, LeWayne Rice; seven grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
